man the crazy thing about babies is that like, some people would think that reading a baby a book about farm animals is teaching them about farm animals, but really it’s teaching them about the concept of a book and how there’s new information on each page of a single object, but really, beyond that, it’s teaching them how language works, and beyond that it’s really actually teaching them about human interaction, and really really it’s them learning about existing in a three-dimensional space and how they can navigate that space, but actually, above all it is teaching them that mama loves them.

yes, read to children! all the children in your life will benefit from having books read to them, and from adults spending one-on-one time with them doing a calm and quiet activity, especially if their lives are normally very hectic. reading to and with kids helps foster early literacy skills as well as social and emotional bonds! it’s great!

and there is an amazing and wonderful resource for children to receive free books every month! it’s called Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, and it’s a book gifting program that mails free, high-quality (English language) books to children from birth until age five, no matter their family’s income or status.

the program extends to children in participating locations in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia! because it started in east Tennessee (where Dolly Parton grew up) some of the books will be Christian-oriented, but the vast majority will not be, and sometimes the book will be in both English and Spanish.

if I remember correctly you can sign any child up if you know their name, address, and birthday. it’s a really wonderful program and it has helped lots of kids in rural areas (like where I live in Tennessee) obtain books and build early literacy skills so they will be that more prepared once they go to school.

edit: I was looking through the site and saw that they also offer Audio and Braille books since 2011!!

its really comforting to know that all the times i was at my lowest and loneliest in the past the whole time i had my self in the future and present who had survived those things looking back with love and tenderness and wishing desperately to offer comfort…i am my own guardian angel and i can use that knowledge when im struggling now and remember that somewhere there is a version of me that has survived this and is watching me with love and pride and joy in her heart
