im really happy when worldwide social progress is made but can we PLEASE drop the “even [x country] is doing better than the US” like. most countries have been doing better than us for a very long time. we gotta stop acting like everyone else is so primitive in comparison to us, especially when we’re celebrating their victories.

like i just saw a post about uruguay updating their laws about trans people to include the right to self-identify and medical coverage on transition related issues and im really hype! but the op captioned it with “even uruguay is doing better than the US!” and it just put me off too much to reblog. other countries’ progress shouldn’t be charted in comparison to our own. they’re progressing, independently from us, because they’re doing better than us. why do we all gotta act so shocked?
