Why is it some of the best characters are the “redeemed villains”?

It might be due to the idea that everyone can change for the better, giving the reader/viewer hope that anyone, including themselves, can come back from something terrible they’ve done.

Not to mention the fact that they can still tap into their “dark side” to benefit the heroes in a way they may not wish to (Kevin’s underworld connections, Peridot’s perspective on Homeworld Gems and their technology, etc.)
