Continuity in 3 of the New Townie Eps

Otherwise known as the “Steven Universe knows what it’s doing, Townie eps aren’t inherently bad” post.

Pool Hopping:

– THE RAIN SCENE IS A DIRECT PARALLEL TO SEASON 1 EP FUTURE VISION. EXCEPT THIS TIME, STEVEN AND GARNET’s ROLES HAVE BEEN REVERSED. STEVEN GIVES COUNCIL TO GARNET INSTEAD OF GARNET TO HIM

– IT RAINS IN BOTH SCENES TOO

– Vidalia’s paintings and who she is, SEASON 2 ONION FRIEND

– SHE PAINTS THEM INSTEAD OF AMETHYST

– The forest looks similar to the SEASON 4 EP ONION FRIEND

– Big Donut is still closed for most of ep, season 5 Sadie killer

-Garnet thinks that onion got abducted into space , which references season 4 Are you my dad and I am my mom

Letters to Lars (AKA THE TOWNIE 5 SEASONS BUILDUP EP)

– TONS OF MENTIONS ABOUT SEASON 5 EP DEWEY WINS, NANEFUA STARTS RUNNING THE TOWN

– THE FRY BITS FROM LIKE EVERY EP EVER, even builds on peedee’s motivation to be independent

– They make a donut for Lars, and Dewey delivers them with Steven right to his parents, partially as condolences for their missing son but also rights the wrong that happened in Dewey wins. Dewey forgot about their son and now does something specifically for him.

– Lars’s parents (comes from season 3 the new Lars and season 5 the good Lars)

– THE STAGE PLAY JAMIE DOES HAS BEEN BUILT UP SINCE SEASON 2, (LOVE LETTERS AND HISTORICAL FRICTION)

– TONS OF TOWNIES IN THIS EP THAT HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED OVER MULTIPLE EPISODES (Barb, Mr. Smiley, Jamie, Dewey, Lars’s parents, Peedee, Ronaldo, Kiki)

– Ronaldo’s outburst at the beginning of the ep has major influences from season 1 horror club and season 4 rocknaldo comes into play when the CGs are working with the townies to make backup plans and he requests to be a lookout

– The evacuation plans all come from worries after prior attempts of abduction throughout the show season 1 jailbreak, season 4 I am my mom.

The Big Show:

– Everything from season 5 Sadie killer is relevant here

– But.. even more prominent is the change in Barb’s personality that occurs in season 2 Sadie’s song

– Barb used to be extremely pushy and she’s very much less so here, she learned from last time.

– Barb mentions making lunch for the band, which is a reference to season 1 Lion 3 where Sadie says barb made lunches for her

– MYSTERY GIRL WAS IN THE AUDIENCE AT THE BACK???? Season 4 last one out of beach city callback

– Greg does a huge part in this, most eps from his backstory are important here but also some references like being apart from his family (Story for Steven season 1, Gem Harvest season 4, Mr Greg season 3)

– He uses his music expertise and experiences from Marty to help manage the band in a supportive way

– Buck Dewey mentions that he learned all his guitar skills from Greg, which lines up with the ending of season 2 Shirt Club

My point is, if you skip townie eps you miss a lot of the subtle callbacks, characteristics, and themes from the show. It really is a special thing this show does and it’s sad when most townie eps range from decent to amazing, but get ignored just for being a “townie”.
